Prepare a targeted résumé for a job in Canada
Connect a vacancy to your actual experience, organise a clear résumé and check what you send to an employer.
Read the vacancy before writing
Keep a dated copy of the vacancy and record the employer, location, closing date and application link. Separate essential requirements from preferred skills. If you lack a qualification, do not hide that with ambiguous wording: check whether equivalency or recognition is required.
Match requirements to real evidence
Make two columns in your notes: the requested skill and evidence from your actual experience. For each example, record your role, action and a result you can discuss in an interview. Quantify only what you can support. This exercise selects relevant experience; it does not confer a regulated qualification.
Organise a version for this role
Give relevant experience prominence. Use clear headings and a readable layout. Choose a file name that helps you identify the version sent. Job Bank’s official guidance includes tailoring the résumé to the role and omitting unnecessary personal information.
Check before submitting
Check contact details and links. Open the exported file on another screen to inspect readability. Do not include a SIN, banking record or identity document in your résumé. Follow the employer’s channel after confirming the vacancy at its source. HiCanadian does not receive résumés: apply on the original website.
Keep a useful application record
Record the submission date, résumé version, public contact and next action. After an interview, note the skills discussed so you can improve your next application. A rejection alone does not establish that résumé formatting caused the outcome; the role, requirements and selection also matter.
