Decide about a car with evidence
Calgary's newcomer hub connects you with settlement organisations, and those referrals can help you ask about housing, school and employment. The car question is personal: test a weekday peak-hour commute, the grocery run and the school journey on transit before you decide. No general promise that a car is required, or unnecessary, is worth more than your own timed journeys.
Check real routes and fares
Use Calgary Transit to see which routes actually serve a candidate address, then ride them at the hours you would travel. Fares and route structures change, so take the figures from the operator in the week you plan rather than from a saved page. Compare the full door-to-door time, including walking and waiting, across two or three candidate areas.
Get the rental terms in writing
- View the unit in person before any deposit and confirm who manages it.
- Write down every inclusion: heat, utilities, appliances, laundry, storage and parking.
- Ask which provincial tenancy regulator applies and read its published guidance.
- Keep payment evidence and ask for written receipts.
A workable first week
- Confirm your address and keep written tenancy details.
- Open a bank account with identification your institution accepts.
- If eligible and you do not already have a SIN, use the official Service Canada application route and protect it.
- Book one appointment with a local settlement organisation.
- Test your weekday commute, grocery run and school journey before deciding on a vehicle.

Read the family benchmark correctly
Statistics Canada's 2025 Market Basket Measure reports a modest basic-needs threshold for a reference family of two adults and two children. Geography is the metropolitan area, not the municipal boundary, and the values sit on a 2023 base in current dollars. It assesses need; it is never an advertised rent, a 2026 newcomer quote or a comfortable-living target.
Shelter in that framework already bundles rent, utilities, appliances and basic tenant insurance. That is why the imported calculator shows separate utilities at zero: included, not free. Replace every reference value with your own quotes and check that you are not paying twice for the same cost.

Build your own totals
Published components are annual amounts divided by twelve, so rounding can make your calculated sum differ slightly from the official threshold, and nothing here is extrapolated to a single person or a couple. Arrival travel, deposits, childcare and personal health needs are separate estimates. Start from your own income and expenses, then revisit every figure after your first full set of bills.

Monthly budget (CAD)
Family — reference: 2 adults, 2 children
Basic-needs reference, not asking rent or a comfortable 2026 budget. Housing already includes utilities, appliances and basic tenant insurance: separate utilities are 0 because included, never free. Replace with your quotes without double counting. Estimate arrival costs, deposits, childcare and personal health needs separately. Rounding can make the calculated annual sum differ from the official threshold. No extrapolated single/couple values.
